This is a minimally invasive treatment method used to correct defects in the shape and colour of the front teeth, in the case of chipping or abrasion.
Typically, only the enamel surface is treated, but for deeper damage or old fillings, preparation extends to the healthy tooth tissue while remaining as conservative as possible. The tooth structure is rebuilt in thin layers using composite fillings. Whether the entire anterior tooth crown is covered, only a chipped edge is restored, or decay in the interdental space is treated, specialised fillings with high transparency, elasticity, and polishability are used to closely mimic natural tooth tissue.
Even minor aesthetic restorations require a dental consultation to evaluate the overall oral health and bite condition. Preliminary treatments such as teeth whitening or tooth shaping on plaster jaw models by a dental technician may be necessary. If occlusal wear is present, lateral restorations are performed to recover the lost bite height. A follow-up appointment is scheduled a few weeks after the aesthetic filling to check for overhanging edges, traumatic contacts, gum healing, patient satisfaction with the aesthetics and comfort, and to perform any necessary corrections or additional polishing.
Aesthetic recontouring typically takes 1-2 visits lasting a few hours each, depending on the extent of the filling, with regular polishing sessions required afterwards. A key benefit of aesthetic fillings is that if part of the restoration chips or breaks, it can be repaired.
The procedure for cosmetic dental fillings
01
Consultation
02
Teeth whitening and laboratory tests, if required
03
Local infiltration or nerve block anaesthesia
04
The tooth surface is treated with a surface dressing or minimally invasive preparation, depending on the extent of the defect
05
The tooth is gradually rebuilt using specialised composite materials
06
A filling is created to mimic the natural tooth structure, and the bite is assessed for any issues. The tooth is carefully contoured, and the surface is polished with non-abrasive materials
07
The patient is advised on home care and any necessary follow-up visits
