Endodontic (root canal) treatment involves the treatment of root canals. The primary goal is to remove inflamed, infected, or dead tissue from the root canal system while preserving the natural tooth. If left untreated, pulp inflammation can damage surrounding tissues, cause pain, swelling, and jaw infections, ultimately leading to partial or complete tooth loss. Properly treated root canals prevent further complications and create a stable foundation for future tooth restoration.

Endodontic treatment is required for severe tooth pain (often difficult to pinpoint), tooth discolouration/darkening, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, or discomfort when chewing or applying pressure. Pulp inflammation can result from tooth trauma, excessive wear, teeth grinding, or the spread of a periodontal infection.

The course of endodontic treatment

01

During the examination, aided by radiographic imaging, the dentist evaluates the condition of the tooth and plans the appropriate course of treatment.

02

In cases of significant crown damage, preliminary preparation may be required before root canal treatment, including rebuilding the crown walls to create a sealed treatment environment.

03

The process includes the removal of old fillings, shaping of the endodontic cavity, elimination of infected and damaged tissues, and preparation of the root canal system.

04

The root canals are thoroughly cleaned using chemomechanical techniques and then disinfected.

05

The root canal is sealed with a specialised, biocompatible filling material to ensure complete closure.

06

Once the canal is sealed, the endodontically treated tooth must be restored with an appropriate prosthetic or filling to fully regain chewing function and maintain airtight sealing. The dentist will determine the most suitable method for restoring the crown after endodontic treatment.

What factors influence the cost of endodontic treatment?

The cost is influenced by the complexity of the procedure, the number of root canals in the tooth, and whether it is a first-time treatment or a retreatment. The estimated cost will be provided during the treatment planning phase. View our pricing here.

Does endodontic treatment hurt?

Anaesthesia is always administered to ensure a painless procedure. The dentist takes all necessary steps to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

Will I experience pain after root canal treatment?

Mild sensitivity may persist after root canal treatment. In cases of severe inflammation, some discomfort may occur between treatment visits.

When is retreatment of a root canal needed?

Root canal retreatment involves removing the existing filling material and retreating the root canal system. Retreatment is required if the initial root canal treatment was inadequate, the crown filling has deteriorated and lost its seal, decay has developed, or a new infection has emerged.
