Oral hygiene consists of individual oral care at home—using a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and other tools—and professional oral hygiene performed in a dental clinic. A combination of personal and professional oral hygiene is essential for preventing dental diseases, maintaining oral health, and achieving a bright, fresh smile.
Professional oral hygiene is performed in a dental clinic using manual and mechanical tools, the Air Flow system, specialised pastes, and brushes. It is advisable to undergo professional oral hygiene 1-2 times a year as a preventive measure, as well as before dental procedures, implants, prostheses, or teeth whitening, in cases of periodontitis, or during orthodontic treatment. A dental hygienist carries out professional oral hygiene.

Your questions
Find answers to the most frequent professional oral hygiene questions
How often should I get a professional dental cleaning?
Professional oral hygiene should be carried out before any other dental treatments, such as fillings, orthodontics, surgery, or prosthetics.
For individuals with healthy teeth and gums, a professional cleaning is recommended 1-2 times per year.
Those with gum disease, diabetes, dental implants, or undergoing orthodontic treatment may require more frequent cleanings, as advised by a dentist or hygienist.
Is professional dental cleaning painful?
No, the procedure is generally painless. If a patient experiences sensitivity, anaesthesia can be provided. Fluoride treatments can be applied to reduce post-cleaning sensitivity.
